The Melbourne Céilí Band brings together a dynamic collective of musicians from Melbourne’s vibrant traditional music scene. Rooted in the rich heritage of Irish music and uniquely Australian folk traditions, the band pays tribute to those who nurtured and preserved this music, especially the Fitzgerald brothers from County Clare and draws inspiration from the legacy of Nariel Creek—a community where music and dance have flourished for generations.
With a lineup blending Irish expats and local talent, the Melbourne Céilí Band fuses the drive of Irish tunes with a distinctly Australian voice. The result is a sound that is both fresh and familiar, bridging generations and traditions while keeping the céilí spirit alive and thriving.
In 2023, the Melbourne Céilí Band made history as the first Australian group to compete in the Senior Céilí Band category at Ireland’s prestigious Fleadh Cheoil. Following months of passionate community fundraising, the band captivated an audience of over 6,000, earning a standing ovation for their powerful debut on the global stage of Irish traditional music.
Beyond the Fleadh, the MCB has delighted audiences at major Australian festivals, including the renowned Woodford Folk Festival. With high-energy tunes, beautiful songs, and inclusive dancing, the band creates a joyful celebration of culture, music, and movement—inviting everyone to join the dance.
The Melbourne Céilí Band acknowledges the Country which we live on and play our music in. We respect Aboriginal Australians and the Elders who are custodians of that Country; the Wurundjeri People of the Kulin Nation.
